They Can't Lock Up Your Mind.

Just when you thought you couldn't get any more locked up, lockdown continues, right?  But they can't lock up your mind.

Sometimes the things that are our greatest trials are our greatest teachers.  When we look back at the things that have shaped us the most, it is rarely the things that have gone easy, or well.  In fact it's the same reason that the Chinese symbol for crisis, is exactly the same as it is for opportunity.  Often a crisis can force us out of the sleepwalk that we have been in and wake us up to new ways of doings things that are more in alignment with who we want to be as a person and as a parent.

The thing is, how you experience life is based on how you choose to perceive it.  Your mind is a terrible master, but a wonderful slave and you have so much choice in how you choose to think.  So today you have a choice ... and it's a big one.

You can choose to carry on doing the same thing, being the same way and going round and...

Hyperactivity, meltdowns, unable to listen? Maybe music is the answer.

wellbeing May 11, 2020
When children are suffering with trauma, ADD, anxiety or autism, simple daily chores can prove incredibly difficult for many.  The problem is, the symptoms can be similar, making it difficult to know how to handle them.  Strong emotions, hyperactivity and the inability to follow simple instructions can make leaving the house or, calming them down for bed, almost impossible.  Our family was no different.  And then one day, I was trying to tell one of my children something for the 15th time, when a song came on the radio ... and he just started singing it. I mean, it went straight in where my words had failed.  And that’s when I knew I had found a way in.  Initially I started writing songs just to help me out. You know, songs to get their shoes on, brush their teeth, or songs to calm them down for bed. But they worked SO quickly, I started to realise I could teach children so much more. You see music is a universal language. It goes straight...

It's better to be a tiger for a day ...

parenting wellbeing May 07, 2020

If there is one thing I know for sure, it's that living in fear is not really living at all. I know, I spent years in fear, locked in my head and with negative feelings.   In fact in terms of biology, the moment our body goes into survival mode, any energy that was used for growth is diverted to survival, which is counter-productive to human health and our immune system.  I found out the hard way that there really are sociopaths and that these people look like everyone else.  These people have no empathy and do not have the best interests of you, or anyone else at heart.  They have their own agenda and it doesn't take into account you, or your family.  The use of fear to control is one of the oldest tricks in the book and is used so heavily in today's media as we are bombarded with negative or even fake news, images of perfection and anyone not seeming to fit the accepted mould is deemed unfit, unworthy, not enough. An outcast.

FEAR.

And our...

Teaching mental and emotional wellbeing to children, through music

music wellbeing Apr 20, 2020

Rachel Davis, from LaLa Tigers, teaches valuable life wisdom to parents and children through music and fun, whilst helping children believe that they can. Rachel says "Self esteem and confidence in children often starts with the little things, like getting their shoes on and brushing their teeth and feeling good about it.  But when we teach children in a playful way, we can also show them that there are always creative ways to approach everything, including life.   If we can use music to teach them about numbers, then why not teach them incredibly coping strategies for living and about mental and emotional health.  I use songs and play to introduce things such as mindfulness, how to trust their inner vision and to help children understand that  they are enough.  Our internal world of thoughts and feelings affects our whole lives and all belief systems are formed before age 7.   We then use these beliefs on a mostly subconscious basis, to run...

New Beginnings

wellbeing Apr 10, 2020

I am not religious and have never have been. Despite being an avid student of a Course in Miracles and having many personal practises that seem common amongst religions, such as gratitude and mediation or prayer, I have never really subscribed to a specific religion. I choose instead to follow my own path and trust the divinity within myself, inherent in all living beings. That said I have deep respect for all faiths and approaches that offer love as a way of living and the significance of the recent turn of world events in light of the Coronavirus lockdown is not lost on me, as we enter into the Easter weekend.  We are indeed at the beginning of a whole new world, as Carl Jung tells us, “Every transformation demands as its precondition "the ending of a world"-the collapse of an old philosophy of life.”
As we venture into a new way of being, I send you all of my love and I hope wholeheartedly that you take this necessary time with your family for reflection and to...

How lockdown will shape you

mental health wellbeing Apr 09, 2020

These experiences will shape you. They will show you resilience and courage you never knew existed. They will shape your child’s mind and their future. And the way that they view both themselves and the world. Tell them that this is an adventure, tell them that this is an opportunity. To see and do things differently. Because when you change the way you look at things, the things look at change. Yesterday somebody said to me that they wish things would go back to “normal” but frankly I can’t think of anything worse. Our planet was literally dying. Our consumerism was out of control. Mass food production as caused global issues, including forcing much food production into unsafe territory in many parts of the world and the consumption of animals has caused several dangerous viruses in the last few years. The lessons are there in black and white. It is time to pause. To rewrite a new ending. We hold an incredible opportunity to recreate our lives from scratch....

All by myself. Single parenting during lockdown

parenting wellbeing Apr 08, 2020

Ok, so I'm trying to make light of it, but quite frankly, there is no other way.  I have been working from home as a full time single parents for 3 and a half years now, so I feel completely adept at lockdown ... it's really just more of the same.  But the added pressure of homeschooling (or not) as the case may be could be enough to flip many parents over the edge.  Having implemented many strategies for survival over the years, I have to say that prioritising your own wellbeing at this difficult time is not jsut important, it's essential.  You cannot pour from an empty cup.   Dancing, meditation, yoga and whatever makes you happy has to be fitted around your day and the needs of any children.  I choose to get up at 5am to get what I need and go to bed with the kids - but that's me.  Trust me, it was a slug fight in the beginning, mornings have never been my forte, but I quickly saw the return ... in my patience levels, my ability to respond...

There are no rules in the current climate

wellbeing Apr 06, 2020

You hold the most incredible opportunity for a new way of life should you choose.  Find your flow, listen to your body.  Watch your children, they teach us so much.  Maybe it's time for a new way of being.  yes, there is fear, yes there may be pain.  But the beginning of a new way of being, must always start with the death of an old one.  Ultimately the only thing that we can expect is being constant in this time of change, is change.

How to stay mentally healthy when working from home with the kids.

parenting wellbeing Apr 01, 2020

In this video we talk about creating a buffer of time for yourself, an insurance policy if you will.  I share my insights on working full time from home and how to stay in alignment with your values and prioritising your own mental and emotional wellbeing as a parent. It is so important to make time for yoga, gratitude, journalling and making sure you can get your work done around the children during lockdown.
