What to do when your child is angry

parenting wellbeing Jun 25, 2020

Anger is a natural defence mechanism and it helps us to feel powerful and in control. When your child is angry, it helps to understand that underneath anger is always some kind of vulnerability. It could be fear, shame, embarrassment or even just hurt feelings, but the anger is there to protect us from the wound underneath. By holding our children in a space of love and refusing to be triggered, we help them to move through the fear of feeling these emotions and allows them to feel safe. This should trigger tears and allow the full expression of the emotion underneath the anger, which you will notice will make them instantly soften and is vital for the child to become the fullest expression of themselves and to avoid them having to build a hard shell, or false self (ego) around the inner wound.

Introducing EFT (tapping) to children with music.

parenting wellbeing Jun 23, 2020

Are bedtimes a struggle? Do your children have strong emotions that they find difficult to handle? Maybe EFT, or tapping could be the answer.  EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) is a bit like acupressure for the emotions and is a fantastic thing to do with and teach younger children. It gives them a tool to be able to release negative energy and allows them to take control of their emotions.  EFT works by tapping on certain meridian points around the body, which stimulates them and can help to regulate anger, stress or a poor self image.  Raindrops is a wonderful song for calming children down at bedtimes, encouraging children to become present and of course to do tapping with. Which is why in my work, I pair this song with an expert workshop for parents and children, from the Amazing Tappy Jo, a A Master EFT Practitioner who has spent years using tapping within the education sector with children.  You can find the song"Raindrops" on all major record providers, or...

Single mum transforms her life and empowers others through music.

If you’d have told me 6 years ago that I would be full time single parenting, homeschooling, relocating, doing a TEDx talk and would be running an online business doing something I loved, I would have laughed in your face.  I was a big hot mess. I’d just come out of a long term abusive relationship, my kids and I were all over the place and I was singing “Wheels on the bus” in a village hall to preschoolers. But here’s the thing ...  I knew I was capable of more. When I decided to take my music sessions online just to escape my physical location, I had to face all of my fear, doubt and insecurity. Did I nail it all? No! I still have many fears, I just got really good at facing them. I grew strong. I learned techniques and mindset. I took control of my racing thoughts and I did a shed load of work on my emotional health. And then suddenly, wheels on the bus just wasn’t going to cut it anymore. I knew I had to teach children what I’d...

Would you want your child to follow their dreams?

mindset wellbeing Jun 03, 2020

Have you ever had a dream so big that when you tell people about it, they look at you like you’re batshit crazy?  Have you ever felt so afraid of changing your life that you don't even know where to start?  I know have.  When I told people about my idea to start a musical programme to encourage a healthy internal world and self belief in parents and children with music, some people told me that I should be more realistic. Or that maybe I should go back to work. Or that maybe I should start smaller.

I know they meant well and they probably had a point.  I mean, I was a full time single mum to two young boys and I was already running another small business, struggling to just get by and juggle everything life threw at us as it was. How would I find the time or resources to build such a dream? I had no songs...no website, no insta.  No nothing.. Nor did I know how to build any of that stuff... I mean, I just ran music sessions for kids in a village...

We are all connected.

wellbeing Jun 01, 2020

With so much hate being spewed from our media, it makes me so sad see that still so many people are still being judged, hated and are living in fear of those who still see separation.  They think they are separate from themselves, separate from other people and separate from their environment.

When we understand that we are one. That we are all connected. That the same energy that runs through you, runs through me and runs through every living thing on this planet, you don't see colour, labels or even species. You just see love. You see God, in whatever form you choose - the Chi, the Force, the Tao, Life Energy, the Universe, or whatever the hell you want to call it - it doesn't really matter, for words cannot define it.  It just is. The all that is. You see beauty in everything and everyone around you and you simply wonder in awe at the perfection of it all. And when you truly understand this, you know that you cannot hurt another, an animal, or even your...

Forget learning and focus on your child's wellbeing instead.

As many parents face sending their younger children back to school in uncertain times, I cannot help but wonder how much focus will be on the children's mental and emotional wellbeing and how much will be on getting them back to "normal," or catching up with the check boxes of curriculum needed, to get them back to where they "should" be.

Given the global and traumatic events of the last few months, it would be naive to assume that children can just go straight back to learning, without addressing the anxiety and emotional distress, that may well be held inside their bodies and their minds.  Let alone any stress suffered as their parents struggled to work and "homeschool."

Seeing their families frightened, changing routines, removing them from their friends and possibly even losing someone they loved will have a profound effect on how they think and feel about themselves, others and indeed the the world.  With negativity pouring from every news broadcast, even if they are...

The "Difficult" Child.

parenting wellbeing May 27, 2020

One of the biggest pre-cursors to issues with mental and emotional health in later life is a child's early environment.  Recent research claims that 1 in 3 mental health issues are caused by adverse experiences in early childhood.   A child's wellbeing is so intrinsically linked to the wellbeing and mental health of their parents or any difficult experiences that they may have encountered.  Children can be labelled as "difficult, yet hyperactivity, tantrums, behavioural issues and emotional irregularity, can also be symptoms of mental and emotional distress.  The problem is, the moment we judge a child, we have lost any hope of helping them. Because judgement instantly kills connection.

Dead.

But in the words of the great Wayen Dyer, "when we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change." Instead of thinking your child is difficult, how about thinking my child is having a difficult time?   As a previous sufferer of...

Your Child's Wellbeing and Mindset, Starts with Yours

parenting wellbeing May 26, 2020

Before age 7, there is no critical factor and this means that they are absorbing absolutely everything into their subconscious as fact.   When we understand this as parents, we understand this, we can start to become super conscious and intentional about the way that we show up with our kids.  Our tone of voice, the language that we use and the expression on our faces, all communicates something to your child and this will subsequently become how they see themselves, affecting their sense of worthiness and self esteem for the rest of their lives.

Introducing Gratitude to your Pre-Schooler

Mental and emotional wellbeing within families has never been so important and one of the simplest ways to increase this is through bringing gratitude into your daily lives.

For anyone familiar with a gratitude practise, it needs no explanation, but others may question why gratitude is so important for a child's wellbeing.  Well, regular gratitude is strongly linked with increased mental health, well-being and long term happiness and it allows our children to get some control over how they feel.   Now I don't know about you, but those are all things I most definitely want for my children.

Practising gratitude works because all thoughts and emotions, as with everything in our world, are really just forms of energy and all emotions have a vibrational frequency.  And one that can be measured.  I'm sure it won't surprise you to hear that fear, anger, shame and indeed all negative feelings, are all at the low end of the chart.  Whereas peace, joy and...
